A Little Girl with an Unyielding Spirit
A little girl who has been in the hospital since she was three months old is determined to give back to the charity that made her hospital stay more bearable. Harmony, now seven, was just three months old when she was diagnosed with viral meningitis. She endured a series of chest infections and bronchitis during her first year of life, but things got even worse when she turned 18 months. After several visits to her general practitioner, she was hospitalized in the emergency department of Sheffield Children’s Hospital. She underwent an X-ray and was placed in ward one with pneumonia. Harmony from Sheffield was found to have respiratory syncytial virus, which affects the airways, including the nose, throat, and lungs. A consultation with a specialist allowed her to access the hospital’s respiratory service, which assists children with breathing issues across the UK. The doctor conducted a series of tests that revealed Harmony had tracheomalacia and bronchiectasis. Tracheomalacia causes the trachea to collapse, making it difficult to breathe, while bronchiectasis affects the lungs’ ability to clear mucus, often leading to infections. Fewer than one in 100,000 children in the UK have bronchiectasis, which is a rare and lifelong condition. As a result, Harmony receives regular care at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, including a two-week course of antibiotics every three months to help manage any infections. Fortunately, Harmony can receive much of this care at home thanks to the Ambulatory Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy Service, which takes care of any patients who need to receive antibiotics intravenously but can otherwise go home. This means that Harmony can maintain her usual routine during treatment. The medical staff has a significant impact on her life. Over the years, Harmony has received wonderful gifts at Christmas and enjoys doing crafts and other activities while waiting for her appointments. One day she asked where all these nice things come from, and she was told about the charity. The Children’s Hospital Charity supports the hospital in its care by funding specialized treatment, equipment, new facilities, a comfortable environment, and important research. Now Harmony has decided to raise money for the charity herself.
