An apple a day and doctors will be unemployed
An apple a day, some experts claim, will spare you the need to visit a doctor. However, there are people who doubt the miraculous power of this fruit. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is a phrase that originates from a Welsh proverb written in 1866: “Eat an apple before bed, and the doctor will struggle to earn his bread.” Those skeptical of this proverb reason as follows: let’s consider the nutrients contained in apples. Firstly, they are a rich source of phytochemicals, including flavanols. These compounds are associated with numerous health benefits, such as maintaining a healthy weight and reducing the risk of heart disease. Apples also contain various polyphenols, including anthocyanins, which give apple skins their red color and are linked to improved heart health. Another polyphenol found in apples is phloridzin. It has been found to help control blood glucose levels. Apples are also high in fiber, primarily pectin, which reduces low-density lipoproteins (LDL)—the unhealthy form of cholesterol—in our blood. Pectin also decreases the amount of sugar and fat we absorb from food, helping stabilize blood sugar levels. And now, attention! In 1866, the proverb was accurate. Back then, the concentration of the listed beneficial nutrients was several times, if not tenfold, higher. Today’s apples are a pale imitation of their former selves.
