Bolivia’s energy sector turns to cryptocurrency – necessity drives the change

The Bolivian state energy company YPFB will use cryptocurrency to pay for energy imports. The reason behind this is the acute shortage of dollars and fuel.

The country is grappling with a dangerous decline in foreign exchange reserves after years of decreasing natural gas exports, which has triggered a fuel crisis. Among the visible manifestations are long lines at gas stations.

YPFB’s management informed journalists that a system for using cryptocurrency to purchase imported fuel has been established. The government has approved the implementation of digital assets.

Government officials confirmed the coordination of YPFB’s actions with the country’s leadership.

For decades, Bolivia exported energy resources extracted from its own subsoil. Today, gas reserves have dwindled, necessitating imports.
