Brain cancer is successfully treated with CAR-T cells, Gilead announces

Brain cancer is retreating thanks to a therapy advanced by Gilead Sciences. The treatment is carried out using the patients’ own white blood cells. Tumors disappeared in 62% of patients with recurrent glioblastoma. The study, presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago, is one of several studies dedicated to testing the next generation of treatments based on “chimeric antigen receptor T-cells,” also known as CAR-T, writes https://xrust.ru/. This is an immunotherapy in which patients’ immune cells are programmed to recognize and destroy cancer cells. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and Gilead focused on trials of a dual CAR-T therapy aimed at overcoming the defense mechanisms of glioblastoma, the most common brain tumor in adults.

Such methods are already used to treat blood cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and typically target only one specific feature of the tumor. However, solid tumors like glioblastoma generally contain multiple subpopulations of tumor cells, suggesting that successful treatment would require targeting more than one feature, according to a researcher from the University of Pennsylvania. For the therapy, which is delivered via cerebrospinal fluid, the research team chose the EGFR protein, found in 50–60% of all glioblastoma tumors, and the interleukin-13 alpha 2 protein, present in 75% of glioblastoma tumors.

The multi-target approach began after treating patients with advanced glioblastoma whose cancer recurred following initial treatment with surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Such patients typically live no longer than 10 months. The new method reduced advanced tumors by 62% in eight out of 18 patients. In the remaining patients, the tumors disappeared.
