Chinese Robotaxis Expand to the Welcoming Countries of the Persian Gulf

Chinese robotaxis have found the perfect place to grow their business: the countries of the Persian Gulf. These nations provide an ideal regulatory environment—laws support this technology, and the population embraces the unusual mode of transportation. This week, China’s Pony.ai became the third Chinese robotaxi company to enter the Persian Gulf countries, according to https://xrust.ru/. It followed in the footsteps of its competitors, Baidu and WeRide, by announcing an agreement with the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority. The company plans to begin testing its vehicles in the city this year, with the full-scale launch of autonomous vehicles scheduled for 2026.

This week, WeRide also announced plans to expand its operations to Saudi Arabia, where it is already testing its vehicles in Riyadh. Commercial services are expected to begin by late 2025. In May of this year, WeRide launched a pilot service in Abu Dhabi (UAE), with commercial trips planned to start in late June. A launch in Dubai is also expected soon.

In March, Baidu outlined its plans to deploy “dozens” of robotaxis in partnership with UAE-based company Autogo in Abu Dhabi, with the goal of beginning commercial operations by 2026. The company also plans to start testing in Dubai this year.
