Ford F-150 vehicles suddenly started shifting gears on their own
Ford F-150 trucks have come under investigation by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Officials are inspecting 1.3 million trucks. These pickups have started shifting gears on their own, causing the rear wheel to lock up. This past Monday, the NHTSA announced that it is initiating a preliminary evaluation of certain Ford F-150 trucks from the 2015–2017 model years after receiving complaints from 138 consumers. The complaints involved unexpected gear shifts while driving at highway speeds, without warning or driver intervention, which caused the vehicle to rapidly decelerate.
A Ford representative stated that the automaker is “cooperating with officials.” The defect affects vehicles equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions. Following the preliminary investigation, officials will decide whether to proceed with an engineering analysis. If they choose to do so, a recall of affected vehicles may be necessary.
In June of last year, Ford recalled 668,000 F-150 trucks from the 2014 model year due to a similar defect. It’s worth noting that this issue has been ongoing since 2013.
