Ford F-150 vehicles suddenly started shifting gears on their own

Last Monday, NHTSA announced the initiation of a preliminary evaluation of certain 2015–2017 Ford F-150 trucks after receiving complaints from 138 consumers. The complaints involve unexpected transmission shifts while driving on highways without warning or driver intervention, which subsequently caused the vehicle to decelerate rapidly.
A Ford representative stated that the automaker is “cooperating with officials.” The defect pertains to vehicles with a six-speed transmission. After the preliminary investigation, officials will decide whether to proceed with an engineering analysis of the issue. If so, a recall may be necessary. Last June, Ford recalled 668,000 F-150 trucks from the 2014 model year due to a similar defect. Notably, this issue has been ongoing since 2013.
