Ford has shut down the development of an electronic brain for cars
Ford has discontinued its program to develop an electronic brain for automobiles. The idea was previously announced as a key initiative to compete with Tesla. The management expressed concerns about the costs and long-term nature of the project. Ford had invested significant resources into the system, known internally as FNV4 (Fully Networked Vehicle). The goal was described as optimizing the car’s software functionality to subsequently boost business profitability. Leaks suggest that the project was abandoned due to skyrocketing costs and delays. A Ford representative stated that the company will integrate the knowledge gained from developing FNV4 into its current software system and remains focused on creating an advanced electric architecture with its so-called skunkworks team. This team, based in California, is working on cutting-edge software development and affordable electric vehicles. Ford’s CEO tasked Doug Field, a former Apple and Tesla executive who joined Ford in 2021, with completing FNV4. Field is one of the highest-paid employees at the company, earning $15.5 million last year.
