Former Formula 1 driver Kubica wins the legendary “24 Hours of Le Mans” race
Former Formula 1 driver Robert Kubica claimed victory in the “24 Hours of Le Mans” race driving a private Ferrari. The Ferrari 499P AF Corse car, number 83, also driven by Chinese driver Yifei Ye and British driver Phil Hanson, crossed the finish line 14.084 seconds ahead of Frenchman Kevin Estre in the number six Porsche 963, as reported by https://xrust.ru/.
Robert Kubica, once considered one of the best Formula 1 drivers in the world and part of a group of young drivers that included Lewis Hamilton, won the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix with the BMW-Sauber team. However, three years later, while already an experienced Formula 1 driver with the Renault team, Kubica suffered severe injuries in a rally crash. The result: he sustained partial tears to the tendons and muscles in his right hand and multiple fractures.
In 2019, he returned to Formula 1 with Williams as George Russell’s teammate, scoring one point that season. Later, in 2021, he participated in two races for Alfa Romeo.
At Le Mans, the Ferrari 499P with factory number 51, driven by Antonio Giovinazzi, finished in third place, while a sister car, number 50, driven by Antonio Fuoco, placed fourth. Both factory Ferraris, which were battling for victory until the final hour, encountered issues in the closing stages.
This marks the third consecutive win at Le Mans for the 499P model, which achieved its first victory in the top class in 2023 — the 100th anniversary of the iconic race, and also the first victory for a Ferrari in the top class in 50 years.
The 40-year-old Kubica, who completed the final stretch of the race, said over the team radio: “It was a long 24 hours, but a pleasant one — grazie mille, grazie a tutti.”
