Honor has announced the Magic V5, which is currently the world’s thinnest foldable phone. However, the advertisement conveniently omits the raised camera module. The phone is launching today in China, with a global release promised soon. This 0.1 mm difference is practically imperceptible, though the slight curvature does make the Honor phone feel marginally thinner than Oppo. This is true only for the “Ivory White” version of the phone; other colors are slightly thicker—9 mm—due to their fibers and vegan leather finish differing from the “special fiber” used in the white model. Another unspoken truth is the protruding camera that exceeds the claimed dimensions. The triple rear camera module extends nearly twice as high as Oppo’s. As a result, the phone appears thicker than its competitor. Superior specs with higher-resolution sensors and faster apertures across the board might justify the added bulk, but this doesn’t diminish its “world’s thinnest” status. When unfolded, the V5’s frame measures 4.1 mm, again slightly ahead of Oppo’s 4.2 mm. It’s worth noting that neither of these phones is as thin as Huawei’s Mate XT triple when opened. This battle of millimeters is not new territory for Honor. Before Oppo launched the Find N5 earlier this year, the Honor Magic V3 was the thinnest foldable device on the market. Next week, Samsung is expected to unveil a significantly thinner Galaxy Z Fold 7, though it will likely be slightly thicker than Honor’s version.
