Indy 500 finalist Marcus Ericsson penalized – the driver ends up in 31st place

This past Monday, IndyCar announced penalties for three drivers and their teams following post-race inspections after the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday. Marcus Ericsson, who initially finished second, has now dropped to 31st place. Kyle Kirkwood, Ericsson’s teammate at Andretti Global, who finished sixth, was penalized and is now in 32nd place, while British driver Callum Ilott from Prema Racing dropped from 12th to 33rd and last place in the field. IndyCar stated that illegal modifications were found in the Energy Management System covers of cars #27 and #28, driven by Ericsson and Kirkwood. In Ilott’s case, his car #90 did not meet the minimum requirements for the height and placement of the endplate.

Ericsson, a Swede who won the 2022 Indianapolis 500, was leading at the end of Sunday’s race until Alex Palou from Spain overtook him on his way to securing his first Indy 500 victory with a margin of 0.6822 seconds. The penalties mean that David Malukas from AJ Foyt Racing now moves up to second place. Mexico’s Pato O’Ward (Arrow McLaren) finished third, Sweden’s Felix Rosenqvist (Meyer Shank Racing) took fourth place, and Santino Ferrucci (AJ Foyt) moved up to fifth.

The penalized drivers will lose their prize money and championship points from their original finishing positions. They are allowed to appeal the penalties.
