The 28-year-old Ledecky passed McIntosh in the last 50 meters, claiming victory with a time of 3 minutes 56.81 seconds, just shy of her American record of 3:56.46, which she set when winning this event at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. McIntosh finished with a time of 3:58.28, while American Claire Weinstein took third place with a time of 4:01.26. This achievement came the day after Ledecky delivered an impressive performance in the 1500-meter freestyle. Ledecky recorded the second-fastest time in history for the 1500-meter freestyle, completing the distance in 15:24.51 and finishing nearly 40 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Jillian Cox of the U.S.
