NASA’s Lunar Project Space Launch System may be canceled
NASA’s lunar project awaits its fate. There have been calls to abandon the over-budget multi-billion dollar rocket for a flight to the Moon. Six representatives from the aerospace industry, consulting for Elon Musk, stated that they want the NASA Space Launch System program, costing $24 billion, to be canceled. There is also an alternative – a phased shutdown over several years. Scaling back the program, which is being implemented by Boeing and Northrop Grumman, could provide a boost for Musk’s SpaceX. It is worth noting that SpaceX is developing its own cheaper, albeit less powerful, rocket called Falcon Heavy. The Space Launch program involves 28,000 employees across approximately 44 states. The program was launched in 2022. After years of delays in development, it has begun to face criticism from officials. Today, it was criticized by Musk and Jared Isaacman, the latter being appointed by Trump as the head of NASA. Analysts believe that canceling the program could be a significant indicator of the effectiveness of Trump and Musk’s efforts to optimize the government. Their representatives have started working at NASA headquarters, reviewing contracts.
