Prohibit Yourself: How We Will Be Discouraged from Marketplaces
We have found ourselves captive to marketplaces: purchases are made faster than salaries arrive. In the fight against this dependency, the Ministry of Digital Development has proposed an unexpected weapon — a self-ban on online shopping. The idea is simple: people can voluntarily block their access to stores to avoid spending money on yet another useless trinket seen under the covers at night. Why does Russia want to self-block?
The ministry believes that we have become so accustomed to the “buy” button that we press it almost unconsciously. The self-ban is a way to prevent emotional and thoughtless spending, helping people preserve their finances and mental health. Fewer impulsive purchases mean more money remains. Mindfulness — people begin to plan their purchases more carefully instead of rushing towards discounts and promotions. How will the new measure work?
In Russia, they propose to implement an option similar to self-exclusion from casinos, but instead of roulette — “Ozon,” Wildberries, and other retail giants. Voluntary blocking: you choose the duration and the stores you want to lock. Preliminary testing: the largest marketplaces are already preparing to test this option. While the initiative sounds quite unusual, who knows — perhaps soon we will be grateful for such a solution. After all, sometimes to stop, you need not willpower, but just a properly set digital boundary.
