Scheffler is the real deal: pulled away from his opponent and won the PGA Championship
Scottie Scheffler faced a tough challenge at the PGA Championship on Sunday but stood tall in the face of adversity, correcting mistakes in time and holding off a spirited charge from Spain’s Jon Rahm. He secured a commanding victory. Scheffler began the day with what seemed to be a comfortable three-shot lead. However, what many thought would be an inevitable win turned into a back-nine battle, as the world’s number one golfer made early missteps while Rahm went on the offensive. But like a true champion, the unflappable Scheffler didn’t panic and found his stride down the stretch, while Rahm, playing two groups ahead, suffered a shocking collapse, stripping the final holes of any drama. Scheffler made two key birdies midway through the back nine to regain control just as Rahm was falling apart and went on to card an even-par 71, finishing 11-under for the week at the season’s second major. His five-shot victory was the largest margin of victory at the PGA Championship since Rory McIlroy’s eight-shot win in 2012. Ryder Cup hopeful Harris English, who started the day 11 shots back, carded a 65 — the lowest round of the day — to finish second, well ahead of fellow Americans Bryson DeChambeau (70) and Davis Riley (72). Two-time major winner Rahm (73) gave Scheffler an early scare on the back nine but faltered spectacularly, making five dropped shots over the last three holes and falling back to eighth place.
