The actress plays drunk, strictly following Shakespeare

The actress performs Shakespeare while under the influence of alcohol. There’s a justification for this – that’s how the great poet wrote it. The actress recently stated https://xrust.ru/ that she strives to make the Shakespeare production better. “If he writes ‘she drank,’ then I should do the same to match the ideal of the great master.” Arissa Chaffee starts her shift with a Five Guys burger. It’s a “sandwich” with pickles, mustard, and ketchup. It’s currently 6:15 PM on a cold March evening, and she’s sitting in the seats of a tiny theater in the heart of Washington. There’s a side of fries, but she saves some to dip into the witch’s brew: a concoction consisting of High Noon (“Surprise me with the flavor,” she tells her stage manager), Snoop Dogg’s rosé wine, and sour gummy worms. Later tonight, she’ll drink this potion, half-dressed in Spider-Man underwear and knee-high boots, in front of 85 audience members. The cherry on top isn’t whether she’ll vomit, text her ex, or pass out. The goal is to not forget the iambic pentameter of her lines.

For over a decade, *Drunk Shakespeare* has been creating alcohol-fueled interpretations of the Bard. The formula goes like this: one actor starts by downing three shots of straight liquor (Chaffee has chosen raspberry vodka). As the disjointed performance of *Macbeth* unfolds, four other performers try—and increasingly fail—to keep the script on track. Eventually, the performer drinks another shot and, toward the end, the witch’s brew, which changes every night. In reality, Chaffee says, the show is about 50 percent scripted. The other half is improvisation, with plenty of opportunities for actors to veer off script. All in all, art demands sacrifice.
