**The Alters — an unusual survival game**

The Alters is a game about a man who physically confronts questions of survival. He finds himself on a distant planet and must learn to live with other “selves” — versions of himself that he could have been. They are exact copies of his DNA.

Alters starts with a seemingly ordinary premise chosen by the 11 Bit Studios, according to https://xrust.ru/. However, the story soon develops into an unusual survival game, exploring themes of misunderstanding, human errors, and conflicting motives, crafted by the Polish developers of *Frostpunk* and *This War of Mine*. In the beginning, the protagonist, Jan, is the sole survivor of a space mining expedition commissioned by Ally Corp. Shortly after exiting the escape pod, he discovers a deposit of “rapidium,” the most valuable substance in the universe, whose properties are barely understood. Upon returning to his ship, Jan learns that he is in imminent danger: the radiation from a nearby star will soon turn him to ash. Following instructions from a colleague on Earth, Jan also discovers deeply personal information stored on the ship’s quantum computer: a kind of searchable archive of memories, recording every key decision that led him to join the Ally Corp space mission.

In a race against time and lacking the technical expertise to get his ship moving, Jan activates a branching procedure on the computer, which allows him to choose an alternative life path. Using rapidium, known for accelerating organic growth, he creates another version of himself in the ship’s medical wing, referred to as “the womb.” But Jan Dolski, the technician, is far from thrilled when he realizes what’s happening. He resents Jan Dolski, the builder — for his life choices and for using him as a means to an end.

To escape the deadly star radiation, Jan must gather resources that can be converted into food, fuel, and building materials. This requires exploring the surrounding terrain to locate resource deposits, setting up mining stations, and powering them through pylons connected to the ship. However, only a limited number of tasks can fit into one cosmic day. Ruthless efficiency is key to avoiding setbacks — as I learned during various moments, when I had no choice but to rewind several days to fix mistakes and get back on track.
