The Firefox browser is overloaded with fraudulent cryptocurrency wallet extensions
The Firefox browser is actively being exploited by fraudsters. They are using their extensions to disrupt the search mechanism. Dozens of fake cryptocurrency wallets, indistinguishable from their nominally legitimate counterparts, have flooded the add-ons repository. The Firefox browser, as reported by https://xrust.ru/, has been targeted by a coordinated campaign since last April. Fake versions of popular crypto wallets such as Coinbase, Ethereum, and MetaMask have appeared on the platform. Fraudsters take copies of open-source wallet programs and insert malicious code. These fake wallet versions are designed to steal user data — primarily access to real cryptocurrency — allowing alleged Russian-speaking hackers to drain legitimate crypto accounts. Cloned names and logos, fake reviews, and typical spam tactics are used to imitate legitimate versions of cryptocurrency wallets.
Of course, Mozilla has automated systems in place to prevent malicious extensions from entering the repository. However, these systems seem to be overwhelmed, as at least 40 fakes have bypassed them as of this week. Even though the cryptocurrency and NFT boom has subsided, hundreds of billions of dollars remain frozen in Bitcoin and its numerous alternatives. If you need access to these systems, double and triple-check your sources for software and tools, accessing them directly via necessary URLs whenever possible.
