The USA has suspended its contributions to the World Trade Organization (WTO). The reason is that the Trump administration is ramping up efforts to reduce government spending. The USA is stepping back from global institutions that it deems contradictory to its economic policies. Today’s paradigm is “America First.” In the long term, a withdrawal from the WHO and reduced contributions to other organizations are on the horizon. Analysts recall that the WTO was already paralyzed by the actions of the USA in 2019 during Trump’s first term. At that time, the US blocked the appointment of new judges to its highest appellate court, rendering its key dispute resolution system only partially functional. Washington accused the WTO Appellate Body of judicial overreach in trade disputes.
The WTO’s annual budget is $232 million. According to WTO documents, the USA was supposed to contribute approximately 11% of this amount. The share is calculated based on global trade volume indicators. A US delegate informed a WTO budget meeting on March 4 that the country’s payments to the 2024 and 2025 budgets have been suspended pending a review of contributions to international organizations and that the WTO would be informed of the results at an unspecified date.
