Trump believes the US should produce tanks, not T-shirts
Trump stated last Sunday that his tariff policy is aimed at stimulating domestic production of tanks and technological products rather than sneakers and T-shirts. Speaking to reporters before boarding Air Force One in New Jersey, Trump said he agrees with the opinion of the Secretary of the Treasury. This opinion, expressed on April 29, was quite original: the US does not necessarily need a thriving textile industry. Interestingly, American textile manufacturers immediately raised concerns. More broadly, Trump stated, “We are not going to produce sneakers and T-shirts. We want to produce military equipment. We want to make big things. We want to engage in artificial intelligence.” Trump, who has shaken global markets with widespread tariff implementations, resumed his tough trade rhetoric on Friday when he insisted on imposing a 50% tariff on European Union goods starting June 1 and warned Apple that he might introduce a 25% tax on all imported iPhones purchased by US consumers.
