Trump Threatens TSMC with 100% Tariffs for Refusing to Build Factories in the U.S.
Last Tuesday, Trump announced that he had informed Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) of the punishment that would follow if it failed to build the promised factories in the United States. The punishment would involve 100% tariffs. Speaking at a Republican Congressional Committee event, Trump criticized the former administration for granting $6.6 billion to TSMC’s American division, which manufactures semiconductors in Phoenix, Arizona. Trump claimed that semiconductor companies do not need financial support. In March, TSMC, the world’s largest chip manufacturer, stated at the White House that it plans to invest $100 billion in new projects. These investments include the construction of five chip manufacturing plants.
