Vietnam Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Victory in War with the US

This past Wednesday, Vietnam marked the 50th anniversary of the country’s victory over the United States. The leadership of the republic described this event as a “triumph of justice over tyranny.” The celebrations culminated in a grand parade in Ho Chi Minh City featuring thousands of marching military personnel and an airshow involving fighter jets and helicopters of Russian origin, writes https://xrust.ru/. Vietnamese citizens waved red flags and sang patriotic songs. The historic anniversary commemorates the initial act of the country’s reunification on April 30, 1975, when communist North Vietnam captured Saigon, the capital of the US-backed South, which was soon renamed Ho Chi Minh City in honor of the North’s founding leader. The fall of Saigon, which occurred roughly two years after Washington withdrew its last combat forces from the country, marked the end of the 20-year conflict that claimed the lives of approximately 3 million Vietnamese and nearly 60,000 Americans, many of whom were young soldiers drafted into the military. In reports, the victorious army was described as consisting of both “well-armed” soldiers in jungle-green uniforms and barefoot teenagers. These events remain vividly remembered by many through images of American helicopters evacuating around 7,000 people, many of whom were Vietnamese, as North Vietnamese tanks approached. The final flight took off from the roof of the US Embassy at 7:53 a.m. on April 30, carrying away the last US Marines from Saigon.
